Introduction

This bitesize webinar offers an introduction to Islamic finance and its relationship to environmental governance. It is designed to give delegates a working understanding of the general concepts and terminology connecting the two areas. The session begins from the premise that environmental challenges are closely linked to how capital is raised and directed. Against this background, Islamic finance offers a distinctive framework grounded in principles derived from Islamic law: the sharing of risk rather than interest-based lending, the anchoring of finance in real assets, the exclusion of activities regarded as harmful and the treatment of the individual as a steward (khalifah) of the earth.

Presented by Fara Mohammad, the session outlines, in broad terms, how these principles interact with the framework of rules and institutions governing environmental matters, the pathways through which they may have an impact, the practical challenges involved and where this developing area may be heading. Delegates should regard this as a general introduction rather than a comprehensive treatment of the subject, intended to provide a foundation for further study or practice.
