The ICAEW Thematic Review - Accountants & The Role of the MLRO

Introduction

The ICAEW have released their 2023 thematic review report on understanding the role of the MLRO.

Based on a review of 240 firms, their MLROs were contacted and asked to answer some detailed questions about the role. The facts and figures have been collated and make for some interesting reading.

• Only 1 out of the 240 MLROs does not perform client facing work
• Most MLROs spend less than 20% of their time on their MLRO responsibilities
• Nearly 70% said their main challenge was the volume of work
• Only 53% of the MLROs have registered to use the NCA SAR online portal
