Introduction

Extradition law in England and Wales is a constantly moving area of law as it seeks to balance the human rights of individuals, the strong public interest in upholding the rule of law, and maintaining mutual trust and confidence between countries.

The last few years have seen significant developments in extradition law, not least the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and a number of key decisions by the Supreme Court (Bertino, Merticariu, El Khouri) that have shaken up and realigned a number of long-held presumptions.

This webinar seeks to identify some of those key issues and topics that are commonly argued before extradition Courts at present to understand how the law is evolving and how these issues can be raised successfully, or when best to avoid them.

What You Will Learn

This webinar will cover the following:

  • How extradition law in England and Wales has developed post-Brexit
  • The arguments that can arise about who has jurisdiction to prosecute international offending
  • How bad do prison conditions need to be to avoid extradition?
  • What happens if the requested person was tried in absence?
  • When is someone a fugitive?

This pre-recorded webinar will be available to view from Friday 22nd May 2026
