Introduction

The insurance industry is uniquely exposed to environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and responsibilities. From underwriting climate-related exposures to complying with diversity and inclusion reporting standards, insurers are under growing pressure from regulators, investors, and stakeholders to integrate ESG into their core strategy.

This session provides a practical overview of the key ESG considerations affecting insurers and reinsurers in the UK, drawing on recent legislation, regulatory priorities, and governance expectations.

We will examine the implications of the Climate Change Act 2008 (Net Zero target), FSMA 2023 amendments, Solvency II governance framework, FCA’s ESG Sourcebook, and diversity and inclusion disclosure rules.

Participants will gain insights into how ESG is shaping regulation, underwriting, investment, and claims handling and leave with practical tools to assess their own ESG frameworks and prepare for supervisory scrutiny.

What You Will Learn

This webinar will cover the following:

  • Identify the key ESG risks and opportunities facing the insurance industry in the UK and beyond
  • Understand the regulatory drivers, including FSMA 2023, the PRA’s expectations on climate-related financial risks, and FCA’s ESG disclosure regime
  • Analyse how environmental factors (e.g. climate change and net zero commitments) affect underwriting, investment strategies, and solvency
  • Examine the social dimension, including the Equality Act 2010, non-discrimination requirements, and diversity and inclusion reporting obligations
  • Explore the governance landscape under Solvency II, including board responsibilities, allocation of risk management, and supervisory expectations
  • Review recent PRA letters (2025 priorities) and climate stress-testing (CBES 2021) and their implications for insurers
  • Benchmark against industry initiatives and ESG reporting frameworks (e.g. TCFD-aligned disclosures, FCA ESG Sourcebook)
  • Gain practical strategies for embedding ESG into policies, procedures, and training in insurance firms
