Introduction

Appeals to the Court of Appeal Criminal Division are becoming increasingly complex. The Guide to Proceedings before the Court has been extant for many years and in May 2023 this was further updated. Practitioners will need to be familiar with the guide, the Criminal Practice Directions and the Criminal Procedure Rules, all before putting finger to keyboard to prepare grounds.

The guide goes into significantly more detail than previously, with several annexes of practical guidance. It is far more prescriptive and deprecates the citation of excessive authorities.

Aside from the law, it gives sound practical advice to advocates who might be considering an appeal or who are in the process of doing so.

What You Will Learn

This webinar will cover the following:

  • McCook letters, duties as a newly instructed advocate and due diligence when taking on a new case before the Court of Appeal
  • The practicalities of preparing to lodge an appeal to the Court of Appeal and obligations under the Criminal Practice Directions and Procedure Rules
  • Specific guidance on appeals against sentence - grounds, loss of time directions and more
  • Preparation for the full hearing - what if the single judge refuses leave on some grounds? Can I still argue the point before the full court…
  • Respondent’s Notice (RN) - will the other side respond and will they be represented at the hearing?

This pre-recorded webinar will be streamed at 12:30pm on Tuesday 11th June 2024 and will remain available to view by delegates who have registered by then for 90 days.
