Introduction

With a focus on advocacy and the different types of hearing, this introductory level in-person course will consider the fundamentals of public children law and its interrelationship with placement for adoption proceedings.

It is aimed to assist you in understanding the law and procedure and acquire experience in calling evidence, cross examining and making submissions to the court.

What You Will Learn

This course will cover the following:

  • Modes of address and preparation
  • Acting in Emergencies and within the Public Law Outline
  • Emergency Orders
  • Advocacy at Interim Care/ Supervision Hearings
  • Preparing for and advocacy in a Child Care Case
  • What if a matter is contested?
  • Case Management Hearings - What are the roles of each party?
  • What type of directions will be sought and why?
  • Do you contest? What matters should you consider?
  • Using the law
  • Issues Resolution/Final Hearings

This course will involve some limited role play, to enable you to apply some of the knowledge and practice to scenarios that the speaker has prepared. The scenarios will be sent to you in advance of the course and you will be invited to read these in advance, so as to assist you better on the day of the course.

Given the course is set at an introductory level, it is not assumed that you will have prior knowledge in the areas of law and practice and therefore time will be taken during the course to explain the relevant law and practice as well.
