Introduction

For lawyers working with private start-ups, it is important to recognize the uphill challenges these entities face in countries with limited resources, limited investment funding, and smaller markets compared to global competitors. Nowhere is this more evident than in the biotech, pharmaceutical, and health tech sectors, where clinical trial outcomes are uncertain and a failed trial can, in some cases, end a company’s existence.

In Singapore, public-private collaborations have emerged to help level the playing field, with public institutions offering support and funding to jump-start start-ups’ growth. Yet, because this support relies on public funding, it inevitably comes with restrictions on how grants can be used before, during, and after they are awarded. These restrictions, if not properly understood, can become a source of friction between collaborators. This is where legal advisers play a critical role: helping both sides navigate the regulatory requirements, understand the rationale behind the restrictions, and reduce the risk of disputes.

Designed for legal practitioners and inhouse counsel advising start-ups in Singapore, this webinar will explore these tensions, highlight why they arise, and offer insights into how lawyers can support both public institutions and private start-ups in building stronger, more sustainable collaborations, an especially vital task in Singapore, where such partnerships will only grow in significance.
