Introduction

This live broadcast session will be of benefit to anyone involved in the billing of the Crown Court aspect of criminal legal aid work.

You may be starting out or you may be experienced in this area but just want to ensure that you are not missing out in any way. You need to be aware of the various documents necessary for the successful billing of Crown Court work from the perspective of both litigator and advocate.

What You Will Learn

This live and interactive broadcast will cover the following:

  • The circumstances in which both litigator and the advocate is paid a fixed fee for Crown Court work rather than a fee dependent upon a page count and trial length
  • The billing of Proceeds of Crime work - hourly rates and where to find them
  • The billing of guilty pleas from the perspective of both litigator and advocate
  • The billing of cracked trials from the perspective of both litigator and advocate
  • The billing of trials from the perspective of both litigator and advocate
  • Making out your case for payment based upon a page count (PPE) where the evidence has been served in a non-paper format i.e. a disc or a memory stick
  • Payment for Newton hearings that go ahead and payments for Newton hearings that do not go ahead - both litigator and advocate
  • Understanding the concepts - classification of offences - categories - bandings within the categories - crucial to a calculation of the fee
  • Special preparation - hourly rates payable and the guidance published by the Legal Aid Agency - the guidance is not the same for both litigators and advocates
  • Representing multiple clients and the payment issues involved - litigators and advocates
  • Trials and re-trials and the payment issues involved - litigators and advocates
