Introduction

The Government’s Planning White Paper proposed reforms to the system to introduce locally created design guidance and codes which will accompany the National Design Guide, National Model Design Code and Manual for Streets when it comes to guiding decisions on the form of development. The NPPF has been revised to elevate the importance of good design as a 'higher level' planning consideration.

Phase 1 of a Pilot Programme for the National Model Design Code has now reported and draws out valuable lessons to help local councils and communities set standards around design.

The Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill includes further measures aimed at enhancing the role of design in planning decision making.

This webinar considers the progress made to date to embed good design and beauty into development and the challenges faced by those who are charged with making these policy aims a reality.
