Introduction

This virtual classroom seminar will provide attendees with an understanding of how registered providers of social housing (RPs) are regulated in England. We will look at what it means to be an RP and the role of the Regulator of Social Housing.

There have been some particularly significant events and developments in the sector going back to the Grenfell fire tragedy in 2017 and recent issues around damp and mould. This has caused a chain of events that has led to the implementation of the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023 which fundamentally alters how RPs are to be regulated.

Alongside this, we are now seeing a consultation on revisions on the consumer standards that RPs must comply with and we are expecting further regulatory standards, including on professionalism in the sector, to be published.

All of this comes at the same time as RPs are facing a rent cap in the midst of a cost of living crisis and have additional pulls on their resources to meet net zero. As ever, the undersupply of housing further adds to a difficult picture for RPs.
