Edward Bates

Edward Bates is a financial services regulatory Senior Associate (employed barrister) at Eversheds Sutherland LLP. Edward covers transactional and non-transactional advisory work for various types of financial institutions, from start-up to established multinationals. Edward advises on a wide range of financial services regulatory areas, such as cryptoassets, regulatory capital, authorised and unauthorised investment funds, regulatory perimeter, financial promotions, consumer duty etc. Previously, Edward worked in-house and led on investment funds and financial promotions at His Majesty’s Treasury, advising on all related issues, including the interaction of these areas with cryptoassets. During his time, Edward also led on key provisions in FSMA 2023, and drafted numerous related statutory instruments related to the overseas funds regime, reserved investor fund, the financial promotions gateway etc. By spending time in the government, Edward is also very knowledgeable about public law and legislation, including the powers of the FCA, PRA and HMT.
