Introduction

Zero-hour contracts have always been somewhat controversial. Recent legislation has made exclusivity clauses unlawful but doubts about the use of zero-hour contracts remain.

In this virtual classroom seminar, we will start by looking at the nature of zero-hour contracts and the issues that surround them. We will look at the Workers (Predictable Terms and Conditions) Act 2023 and the changes that Act brings to manging unpredictable working patterns. We will then look at the issue of employment status, and how this applies to those working on a zero-hour contract.

We will then move on to look at the use of zero-hour contracts compared with fixed term contracts and will also consider issues associated with part-time working.

From that we will conclude with considering how to use zero-hour contracts, if they are the best option for the organisation. We will do this learning through a series of case studies, to explore the issues fully.
