Introduction

VAT affects every transaction within the hospitality sector, from accommodation, food and drink sales to spa treatments, event packages and promotional offers. The rules are often complex and subject to frequent change, creating significant compliance risks and the potential for costly errors.

Recent developments, including the Kentucky Fried Chicken dip pots case, have brought the VAT treatment of bundled supplies into sharp focus. The principles arising from such cases have implications far beyond takeaway food and can affect the VAT treatment of hotel packages, spa breaks, conferences and other combined offerings.

HMRC continues to regard hospitality as a high-risk sector and regularly challenges businesses on both output tax and input tax matters. Understanding the correct VAT treatment is therefore essential for anyone responsible for compliance, reporting and risk management.

Using practical examples and case studies, this new virtual classroom seminar is designed for those with a working knowledge of VAT and will explore the principal VAT issues encountered across the hospitality sector. It will help delegates identify risks, avoid common pitfalls and maximise legitimate VAT recovery opportunities, making it particularly valuable for accountants, bookkeepers, finance managers, owners, operators and advisers with responsibility for VAT within hospitality and leisure businesses.

This comprehensive 6-hour course will be delivered over two consecutive half-day sessions. The first session will focus on output tax issues, including accommodation, food and drink supplies, events, packages and bundled transactions. The second session will examine input tax recovery, common problem areas and opportunities to improve VAT efficiency while reducing the risk of HMRC challenge.
