Introduction

The Sentencing Act 2026 introduced reforms to the way criminal offences are sentenced in England and Wales, with implementation taking place in a staged process. The first stage of these reforms came into effect in March 2026.

This virtual classroom seminar will review the impact of the changes introduced in March 2026 and consider their practical application through relevant examples.

The live session will also examine further anticipated changes, including those that have attracted significant media and political interest due to their potential impact on the early release of prisoners.

It is aimed at prosecutors and will provide an opportunity to consider the practical implications of the reforms and their application in criminal proceedings.

What You Will Learn

This live and interactive course will cover the following:

  • A refresh of stage one of the Sentencing Act and its effect on sentencing and bail decisions
  • Consideration of practical examples and case law arising out of these changes
  • An introduction to the next stage of reforms to be introduced under the Act
  • Practical issues with these reforms

Recording of live sessions: Soon after the Learn Live session has taken place you will be able to go back and access the recording - should you wish to revisit the material discussed.
