Introduction

The UK's non-financial reporting framework is continuing to evolve, while the Government reviews corporate reporting requirements and considers reforms aimed in part at reducing the reporting burden on medium-sized companies.

For company secretaries, in-house lawyers, boards and governance professionals, this creates a need to understand both what companies are required to report now and where the framework may be heading.

This virtual classroom seminar will provide a practical overview of the current UK non-financial reporting requirements, focusing on the Strategic Report and Section 172 statements, before considering the Government's proposed reforms and their potential implications for medium-sized companies.

The session will also briefly put these developments into the context of wider sustainability and ESG reporting, including relevant international developments. Particular emphasis will be placed on the practical question of what organisations should be doing now while the future reporting framework remains uncertain.

The session will be interactive, allowing time for questions, discussion and consideration of practical scenarios.

What You Will Learn

By the end of the session, attendees will have considered:

  • The current UK framework - who is currently in scope of the principal non-financial reporting requirements and what companies need to report
  • Strategic Reports and Section 172 statements - the key requirements, their purpose and some of the practical issues that arise when preparing and reviewing these disclosures
  • The Government's review and proposed reforms - what is being considered, with particular focus on proposals that could reduce reporting requirements for medium-sized companies
  • The wider ESG reporting landscape - a concise overview of significant UK and international sustainability reporting developments and why they may matter to UK companies
  • Preparing for change - practical steps that company secretaries, in-house lawyers, boards and governance professionals can take now while the future requirements remain subject to reform
