Introduction

With the continuing imposition of legislative demands on employers the risk of non-compliance becomes greater and in turn the various penalty regimes and costs of professional indemnity insurance become a greater concern for employers and their agents.

For practices offering a payroll service the fee structure and profitability is directly impacted by managing the compliance risk and running an efficient payroll service. Since the introduction of RTI more and more government policies utilise this link - for example the apprenticeship levy from April 2017 is being developed to use RTI.

  • Do you know what HMRC's latest stance is on employment status? Do you know about all the individuals who may be 'working' for you or your clients but are not on PAYE?
  • Do you understand the complex relationship between state and workplace pensions, tax relief and pension flexibility. Could you explain this to an employee or to your HR and reward teams?
  • Do you know what to look for when processing benefit and expenses to ensure they are being paid compliantly and cost effectively, because HMRC do if you don't! Do you know what payrolling benefits means for payroll operations and all the other changes to this area from April 2016?

This course is aimed at payroll managers/supervisors, practice managers who oversee payroll or compliance, payroll bureau managers/supervisors, partners who oversee a payroll operation or who audit clients' payroll operations.

What You Will Learn

This course will cover the following:

  • The various strands of the law that apply to payroll processing and the legislative process in general
  • How to determine the employment status of an individual - an even more pressing compliance issue given HMRC's further crackdown on 'false self employment' since April 2015 and again in April 2016 and the broad definition of 'workers' for auto-enrolment
  • Understand the interaction of tax, NI and pension schemes including pension protection in order to advise employees of the tax implications of this key benefit and to ensure the employer is compliant
  • Process the 17 different types of court orders understanding how they interact with each other and student loans, the risk of non compliance can lead the order to have to be repaid by the employer not the employee!
  • Understand the link between expenses and benefits provision and payroll compliance including issues for HR and Finance teams, and the use of salary sacrifice as a reward strategy
  • The compliance risks of the RTI regime: PAYE penalties, use of RTI employee and employer data across government
  • The tips, traps and tangles of Statutory Sick Pay, Statutory Maternity Pay, Statutory Adoption Pay and Statutory Paternity Pay
