Introduction

With the first year’s quarterly update deadlines now behind us, how is Making Tax Digital (MTD) working in practice for landlords with jointly owned property?

This virtual classroom seminar examines the practical issues encountered during the first year, with particular emphasis on record keeping, reporting responsibilities and the complexities of joint ownership. It will also consider the position of landlords entering the regime from April 2027 and preparations for the first year-end finalisation under MTD.

Presented by Russell Cockburn, this session will provide practical insights for advisers supporting landlords with jointly owned property and highlight areas where uncertainty remains.

What You Will Learn

This live and interactive session will cover the following:

  • Assessing which joint owners are within scope - individual qualifying income, ownership shares and other income sources
  • Supporting landlords entering MTD from April 2027 and preparing for further expansion
  • Qualifying income and taxable profit - understanding the distinction and its practical implications
  • Digital records for jointly owned property - sharing information and coordinating records between owners and agents
  • Quarterly updates - practical experience, available reporting easements and correcting errors
  • Reporting property income and expenses where joint owners have different MTD obligations
  • Common operational difficulties - lessons learned and approaches to improving processes
  • Preparing for year-end finalisation - reconciling information and making tax adjustments
