Introduction

Law firms must be able to demonstrate not only that training has been provided, but also that their staff are competent to perform their roles. SRA requirements, Lexcel assessments and CQS compliance checks all place importance on how firms identify learning needs, supervise staff and monitor continuing competence.

Maintaining a record of attendance at training courses may not, by itself, demonstrate that learning has been understood and applied. Firms should be able to show how development activities reflect individual responsibilities, the firm’s work and risk profile and relevant regulatory and quality standards.

In this new virtual classroom seminar, Tracy Thompson will explain how law firms can develop a proportionate and defensible learning and development framework. Drawing on examples from audits, assessments and regulatory reviews, she will consider how firms can identify training needs, evaluate the effectiveness of learning and maintain meaningful evidence of competence.

What You Will Learn

This live and interactive session will cover the following:

  • Understanding SRA, Lexcel and CQS expectations concerning learning and competence
  • Identifying training needs by reference to roles, responsibilities and the firm’s risk profile
  • Developing a proportionate learning and development programme
  • Moving beyond attendance records to demonstrate continuing competence
  • Using file reviews, supervision and feedback to identify development needs
  • Assessing whether training has been understood and applied in practice
  • Recording learning, reflection and competence clearly and defensibly
