Introduction

With much talk of the United Kingdom being close to a period of recession, recovering money owed is a priority. Never before has this area of work been so important as effective cash and credit collection processes are essential for all businesses, and many are increasingly turning to their lawyers to pro-actively advise them on this area. This new course will bring you fully up to date with what is occurring in this field of law in 2026 and provide you with a series of proactive tips so that you will be in the best position to advise your clients and improve their own recovery rates.

In this area, enforcement should be at the forefront of all lawyers’ minds when they undertake any case involving the recovery of money for a client. It is not enough simply to obtain a judgment, but the real skill is in the enforcement process. In recent years there has been much focus on this area of law and it is very important to be fully aware of all the options and advise proactively to maximise opportunities for your clients. Finally, debt issues and insolvency often go hand in hand so navigating both areas is very important and an understanding of when to use insolvency procedures is another weapon in the armoury of the professional.

This course will guide you through all relevant changes and developments in the last 12 months and also signpost potential directions of travel going forward. Recent relevant case law will be referred to and analysed.

Presented by Stephen Allinson, a solicitor and licensed insolvency practitioner who is recognised as a leading lawyer and author in this area, this course is designed for all those who work in the fields of debt recovery and enforcement. It will, therefore, be of considerable interest to commercial litigators as well as debt recovery professionals both in house and in private practice and also credit control and finance departments in law firms and other businesses.

What You Will Learn

This live and interactive course will cover the following:

  • Educating your client on an effective credit control process
  • Assessing the debt and the debtor before litigation to plan a recovery strategy
  • Tips and tactics to maximise the county court claim and to avoid problems - preparation is the key
  • Getting judgment: assessing your enforcement options and ensuring you use the right one
  • An overview of the law of execution generally - the most popular enforcement method and subject to much discussion (and change) in 2026
  • Insolvency procedures: to use or not to use in your debt recovery work - that is the question

Recording of live sessions: Soon after the Learn Live session has taken place you will be able to go back and access the recording - should you wish to revisit the material discussed.
